For many life insurance applications, a paramedical exam is the step that sets your risk class — and therefore your premium — for the life of the policy. It's straightforward, but how you prepare can meaningfully affect the numbers. Knowing what to expect removes the anxiety and helps you present your best, truest health picture.
What the exam includes
A typical exam takes 20–30 minutes at your home or office: height, weight, blood pressure, a health questionnaire, and usually blood and urine samples. For larger coverage amounts, an ECG or additional tests may be added. The results feed the insurer's underwriting, which places you in a rate class from preferred-plus to standard.
How to prepare
Small choices in the days before can move your numbers. Avoid alcohol for 48 hours, limit caffeine and salty foods the day before, fast for 8–12 hours if bloodwork is scheduled, and schedule the exam in the morning when you're relaxed. A good night's sleep and hydration help; a heavy meal, a workout, or a stressful morning can hurt.
Honesty protects the policy
Disclose your full health history accurately — omitting a condition to improve a rate risks a contested claim later. The exam and your records are cross-checked; the goal is a rate class you'll keep, not one that unravels. We walk clients through the exam and the questionnaire so the application is both favorable and truthful, which is the only combination that lasts.
