Sinking Funds: Saving for the Predictable So It Stops Surprising You

Most 'emergencies' that drain a household budget aren't emergencies at all — they're predictable expenses that arrived on schedule. Car repairs, registrations, holidays, back-to-school, the annual insurance bill: you know they're coming, just not the exact week. A sinking fund is the simple tool that turns these from crises into planned line items.

How a sinking fund works

For every predictable irregular expense, estimate the annual cost and divide by 12. Set that amount aside each month in a dedicated sub-account or category. When the bill arrives, the money is already there — no scramble, no credit card, no disruption to the monthly budget. The expense becomes as routine as the electric bill.

What belongs in a sinking fund

Anything large, irregular, and foreseeable: vehicle maintenance and registration, home repairs, holidays and gifts, annual insurance premiums, property tax, vacation, and even the next phone or laptop replacement. The test is simple — if you know it's coming and it isn't monthly, it belongs in a sinking fund rather than an emergency fund.

The freedom it creates

Sinking funds shrink the emergency fund's job to true emergencies only, which means the emergency fund can be smaller and reached faster. They also remove the guilt from spending on planned things — the holiday is funded in advance, so enjoying it doesn't create stress. We help clients build a sinking-fund system in the first month of coaching, because it changes how every subsequent month feels.
